Q&A: Unqualified incompetent bosses placing barries to highly educated young employees?

Question by alec: Unqualified incompetent bosses placing barries to highly educated young employees?
I made a tremendous effort to obtain my MBA and PhD with the understanding that a high education and some experience were going to project me to executive positions at the Director or VP level earning a 6 figure salary. The basic principle was that companies are in business to make money and therefore it makes sense to place the most intelligent individuals at the top.

Unfortunately, after 5 years of working in the corporate world, I learned that companies are nothing else but high school environments for adults. Politics and personal egos prevail over doing what is right for the company’s bottom line of creating revenues and efficiency.

Thus, getting promoted is all about who you are friends with, who you have lunch with, who you play golf with, or who likes you and who doesn’t.

Furthermore, you can be mediocre at what you do and even unqualified, but you can get to the top of an organization if you have lots of seniority with a given company (this is what people call experience). This so-called experience is so overrated, I have met so many bosses that claim to have 15, 20, 25 years of experience, but they are so amazingly incompetent at what they do.

When I get hired, I usually get the initial speech by my bosses saying that I am obviously a highly educated individual, but I need many years to learn their business and how they operate. Interestingly, it takes me about 2 months to understand their entire business and I even start producing solutions to improve revenues and efficiency within 2 months. Here is the point where the problems start because unprofessional co-workers start to feel jealous and even threatened by my intelligence and skills.

I know that some are going to say that I should learn not to make my coworkers feel threatened. However, I am just doing my job, my coworkers are the ones that should learn that we all get paid to do our best at our respectives jobs.

It is time for corporate America to wake up and understand that to remain competitive at a global level we need to stop this outdated corporate culture and start placing highly qualified intelligent professionals at the top (regardless of age or seniority) . This is already being done in Asia and Europe where the majority of Senior managers, Directors, VPs and CEOs are younger and have MBAs (sometimes 2 master degrees) and even PhDs.

I will appreciate people’s comments.

This is what is referred to in England as ‘the Ox-Bridge Connection’, because a lot of high level bosses were educated at Oxford or Cambridge and so have a ‘brotherhood’ with similarly educated people.

Or, in other words, the boss is an ass. Listen to what he says, nod politely, say yes sir, then do the job properly rather than how he wants

Nonprofit Career Guide Helps Young Professionals Find Meaningful Work

St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) May 28, 2008

Young professionals hoping to make a difference in their careers now have an unprecedented, definitive resource for navigating the expansive nonprofit sector. The Nonprofit Career Guide: How to Land a Job That Makes a Difference, by Shelly Cryer, is the most comprehensive, up to date resource for anyone interested in employment in the nonprofit world.

The nonprofit sector currently employs nearly 14 million Americans — 11 percent of the U.S. workforce — and may need as many as 600,000 new leaders over the coming decade as today’s leaders retire. With the increase in opportunities, and the need for talent, employee recruitment efforts and compensation packages have risen to levels previously reserved for the public or private sector.

“Charities, foundations, businesses, and governments all need to realize how our communities will suffer if nonprofit groups are not able to continue to attract dedicated workers. Many local economies depend on nonprofit organizations to provide job opportunities and attract businesses,” says American Humanics President Kala Stroup. “This guide couldn’t have come at a more critical time as nonprofits consider the future health of the sector’s workforce and their ability to cultivate diverse, prepared, and passionate leaders.”

“The Nonprofit Career Guide” provides information and specific strategies suitable for anyone, at any point in his or her career, with specific material for those entering the workforce for the first time. Its clear picture of the nonprofit landscape will also benefit educators who teach and lecture about the sector and those who provide career counseling.

Cryer offers a thorough analysis of the nonprofit sector, its growth in prominence and scope, and highlights future trends. “It would be difficult to exaggerate the impact that the nonprofit sector plays in the United States,” says Cryer, adding, “Nonprofit organizations support and strengthen nearly all arenas of social, political and economic life, and operate on international, national and local levels.”

As a sound, step-by-step road map for the job seeker’s journey, the book includes how-to advice about job research, networking, search strategies, writing cover letters and crafting resumes, as well as keys to successful interviewing and compensation negotiation. “The Nonprofit Career Guide” gives honest information about positions in senior management, program and service delivery, administration and finance, development and fundraising, marketing, communications and consulting — including sample job descriptions.

In addition to the road map, “The Nonprofit Career Guide” offers a sense of the size, scope, number and range of work opportunities in the nine main categories of nonprofits. Through profiles of nineteen nonprofit professionals, in positions at many different levels from organizations around the country, readers learn what their jobs are really like, what they look for when recruiting staff, and their perspectives on who excels in their type of work.

“‘The Nonprofit Career Guide’ details all the decisions and steps to finding the right job with the right organization,” according to Bill Bentley, President and CEO, Voices for America’s Children. “It provides practical advice and offers a pathway for making a career of making a difference.”

Tips for Buying a Car for Your Young Driver

xml:lang=”en” lang=”en” xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”>

Tips for Buying a Car for Your Young Driver

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) June 4, 2010

Like many parents, you may be considering buying your high school or college graduate a car as a gift this summer. And like most parents, you need to compromise the age of the car, safety features and the style your graduate is looking for with your budget. Most likely, you are considering a used car as a graduation gift.

According to Frank Cantor, owner of Cantor’s Driving School “Don’t even consider a car without Anti-lock brakes. This is one safety feature that is not worth compromising on.” It’s important to get the newest safety features possible when shopping for a car for your young driver.

Consumer Reports recommends with any used car purchase to have it thoroughly inspected by a qualified mechanic before you buy it. Jud Matthey, ASE Certified Master Mechanic and owner of Matthey Automotive in Collingswood, NJ says “Looking for a model with a history of safety and reliability is your best bet. Some of the safest most reliable cars out there are Honda’s, Toyota’s and Fords.”

“On initial inspection, check tire tread and pressure, warning lights on the dash board, fluid levels and quality (oil, transmission, brake and coolant) and look for leaks under the car. If any of these are bad, move on to the next used car” says Mr. Matthey. “Also ask the history of the vehicle. Has it been regularly maintained? Have there been any major repairs? Can the owner provide you with a service history? How many owners have there been?” These are all important things to ask before making a purchase.

Once you find a car both you and your young driver can agree on, then is the time to take it to your mechanic for a more thorough inspection. “An ASE Certified Mechanic can tell you more about the car, and if any major repairs will be needed in the near future” says Mr. Matthey. “It’s worth the investment to be sure you are buying a safe and reliable vehicle for your child.”

Tremendous advances in crash protection have been made in the past 10 years. Check the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (http://www.iihs.org) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (http://www.safercar.org) Web sites to see crash results for models you are considering. Both sites post results that go back to the 1990s.

Mr. Matthey also recommends looking for a vehicle with the most safety features as possible. “Look for a model that has multistage advanced front air bags, side and head-protection curtain airbags, antilock brakes and electronic stability control. All these life saving safety features are worth the extra money if you can afford it.” For help ensuring the used car you are buying is safe contact Jud Matthey at http://www.MattheyAutomotive.com or call him at 856-854-2507.

“SUV’s and sports cars are not the best option for young drivers,” says Frank Cantor. “They are the most unstable and the easiest to drive too fast. For inexperienced drivers, it’s best to look for a vehicle with a 5-Star Safety Rating, such as the Mazda 3.” All of the vehicles used at Cantor’s Driving School are Mazda’s with 5-Star Safety Ratings. You can find all the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash-test ratings at http://www.hwysafety.org.

“Vehicles with electronic stability control (ESC) are my first choice for young drivers” says Mr. Cantor. “ESC is proven to keep cars from sliding which can prevent an accident in the first place. Experience is the number one factor that affects drivers in a crash. If you can help prevent the crash in the first place, it’s obviously a benefit.” To contact Frank Cantor for safer driving tips and driving instruction for your young driver visit http://www.cantorsdrivingschool.com or call Frank at 610-277-1050.

Overall, the decision of what car to buy should be based on safety and reliability. Explain this to your teen when shopping for a used car, so they can understand why some of the models and styles they like are not options. There are many sources for more information on safe cars, such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the National Traffic Safety Administration and Consumer Reports.

Young Women Changing Our World, One Business at a Time

Young Women Changing Our World, One Business at a Time

Did you know that by the year 2010, women will contribute to 60% of the wealth in the United States?  That’s right!  Women entrepreneurs in particular are on the rise and making a huge impact on our global economy.

The Institute for Women Entrepreneurs (IWE) is an organization that recognizes women business owners and their successful contributions.  This year, IWE was awarded by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA), an award for Women’s Distinguished Center of Excellence.  IWE has created The Leaders of Distinction and Entrepreneurs of Distinction awards to honor those women entrepreneurs whose vision and success has inspired others.

When going about trying to come up with starting your own small business, you will first want to think of a unique and creative idea that possibly no one has ever thought of or put into action yet, or even take a business idea that is already in effect and changing it up bit to make it your own.  You will want to seek out advice from those involved in maybe someone already in the field of business in which you plan to follow in or anyone who has experience in the business world.  All it takes is some creativity, good communication/networking skills, determination, and a good work ethic to get your small business up and running!

This year two very talented entrepreneurs, Andrea and Carla Sancho, have been awarded The Entrepreneurs of Distinction award for their online retail website, WeddingCollectibles.com.  The girls’ website, which was launched in 2006, is dedicated to selling cake toppers and other fun bridal accessories.  Andrea and Carla are both excellent examples of women entrepreneurs who were able to take the great idea of selling wedding cake toppers and accessories from their parents, and presenting it through technology and social media outlets.  After both graduating from Chapman University, the girls followed in their parents’ footsteps and brought their young, fresh perspectives to the business by incorporating more technologically savvy ideas in order to expand their clientele in the wedding industry.  These very talented and motivated young women entrepreneurs, are very excited to have been honored such an award.

IWE has claimed that, Andrea and Carla’s successful business, creative use of technology, and vivacious entrepreneurial spirit, has placed them in the category of emerging companies to watch out for!

Wedding Collectibles offers a wide selection of wedding cake toppers and accessories for the bride and groom to be.
