Does It Matter Where You Get Your MBA From?
One of the most commonly debated issues when it comes to discussing the MBA or Masters in Business Administration Degree is whether it really matters where you get your degree from. There are a variety of opinions on the issue and generally the arguments about the issue revolve around the importance of three factors: Location, Reputation and Convenience. In this article I will explore what the competing sides to this debate are and how you should make your decision. Like many things in life, the truth is the answer as to whether it matters where you get your MBA can be summed up in those two poignant words: It depends.
Reputation
Traditionally, MBA schools fell into two general categories. There were the top 10-15 schools that were the cream of the crop and then all the others. The top schools included many Ivy League stalwarts such as Harvard, Wharton, Columbia, Berkeley and Princeton among others. It also included top notch business programs that frequently topped the list along with the Ivy crowd such as Northwestern’s Kellogg School and Stanford University.
The reputation of these schools is so stellar and the alumni networks so powerful that both top Wall Street Investment Banks as well as top tier household corporations recruit students directly out of these programs. In years past it would not be uncommon for a graduate of a top MBA program to have his pick of several 6 figure job opportunities with lucrative hiring bonuses and incentives right out of school. Whether located on the west coast, east coast or somewhere in the middle, the sheer reputation and pedigree of an MBA from these top schools has launched thousands of powerful careers.
Location
For those that either can’t gain acceptance or that prefer to choose a school that might cater more to a particular industry or area where location is a consideration there is a competing philosophy of choosing MBA programs. Especially in these tough economic times when traditional MBA Wall Street jobs are not as plentiful, many students are targeting their careers toward certain non-traditional MBA niches such as the environment, hi-tech startups or government work.
For this reason it might make sense to attend a school in the northern California area for instance if one was interested in pursuing work in one of the local high tech companies. Many environmental companies such as wind and solar energy ventures are based in the mid-west which might hire more from those schools that are local. Even those that are pursuing traditional jobs on Wall Street might find it beneficial to be in or around New York City in order to take advantage of internships and networking opportunities with New York firms that they would not have the opportunity to do if they were located in a different part of the country or far away.
There is also the legitimate argument that one of the biggest assets that an MBA program gets you is both the internships and alumni network. For those looking to live in a particular part of the country, attending and MBA program with strong regional and local connections makes sense and can provide great resources and connections in that area that attending a more highly rated, but less connected school could provide.
Convenience
Finally, the last category I’ll discuss has to do with convenience. The biggest beneficiary of this argument is no doubt the emerging and growing trend of obtaining your MBA via an Online or Distance Learning Program. While few of these programs can compete with the prestige of a traditional bricks and mortar in-person school, many provide much of the same core curriculum as well as numerous electives. While networking and internship opportunities will most likely pale in comparison to traditional schools if they exist at all, for working professionals that already have an established network this might be a requirement or of limited value.
Additionally, those pursuing the MBA purely for academic reasons to obtain knowledge, the credential or even some entrepreneurs that have a clear cut business plan they simply want to develop more while in school, the convenience factor of Online MBA programs can’t be matched. And then of course there’s the dramatic cost savings that an Online MBA can provide compared to a traditional school. Because every student’s situation is different, it is important to think through your own particular goals and career plans. It should quickly become clear whether it matters where you get your MBA from.

Is An Online MBA Right For Me?
Getting your MBA online has become a popular option for many people. One of the biggest questions I’m often asked is whether pursuing a Masters in Business Administration through a distance learning program is the right thing to do for them? In this article I thought I’d outline the most common reasons people choose to pursue this Masters Degree online instead of through a traditional bricks and mortar university.
Flexibility
One of the great things about online degrees is that they allow you the flexibility of working when you want to. If you have a full or part-time job or if you have other obligations that prevent you from attending classes on a fixed schedule then you can easily pursue your degree at night or whenever on your own time. This is a great choice for any number of working professionals who desire the MBA to advance in their career but can’t afford to stop working for the typical 2 years needed for a full time in-class MBA program.
Additionally, such people such as stay-at-home mothers, those that travel or have erratic schedules are all great candidates for pursuing their MBA online. Finally, because of the ability to take breaks during your coursework, the Online MBA is a great choice for someone that might not be able to pursue the degree straight through and might need a semester or more off before the continue. Many programs allow you flexible time constraints that you might not have in a traditional program.
Cost
Everyone knows that traditional MBA Programs can be quite costly. It is not unusual to have tuition and expenses well over $100,000 at traditional in-class universities for the full degree Add in room and board and materials and books and you can end up with a final bill well into the six figures!
The beauty of pursuing your MBA online is that although you do have expensive iMBA programs from some of the leading schools available, you also have numerous lower cost alternatives that can still give you a fantastic education for a fraction of the cost. Some leading online degree administrators such as The University of Phoenix or Devry’s Keller Program can have a total cost of less than $30,000 which is a great value for a full MBA.
Availability
While we would all love to have illustrious Ivy League Degrees with straight A GPA’s, the truth is that the vast majority of those desiring an MBA do not. This makes getting accepted into a traditional ‘Top Ten’ bricks and mortar MBA Program unlikely. Fortunately, there are Online MBA Programs that have varying requirements for all possible students and what’s more these are still very high quality MBA Programs. While most do require you have at least a Bachelor’s Degree, the admission requirements are considerably more flexible in online programs making a great education available to just about everyone.
Conclusion
Clearly there are a wide variety of reasons why pursuing and Online MBA could be right for you. By thinking through your own personal situation you be able to see if the trade-offs of not having in-person contact with other students and teachers outweigh the benefits. Technology enables even those with the most stringent requirements the availability of a Masters in Business Administration to further their careers. Should I Get an Online Mba?
Should I Get An Online MBA?
Read this and other great articles about Online MBAs at http://www. MBAonline. me
Ever greater numbers of students and professionals alike are finding obtaining a Masters in Business Administration essential to reach the professional goals they seek. While there are numerous types of MBA Programs to choose from the predominant decision is between several types. Traditionally, the full time, two year Masters Program, the part time and the newer accelerated programs have been given in person at institutions of higher learning. More recently Online MBA Degrees have been offered raising several questions about both their quality in the learning experience as well as what they gain the degree holder in the workplace. Quite simply, is it worth getting an MBA online? The answer as with many things is. . . it depends.
While the top ten MBA Programs at Ivy League and select institutions remain the ‘gold standard’ that top Fortune 500 firms recruit from and expect to see on resumes for their executives, for many these institutions are not a realistic option. While there are numerous second and third tier school programs available, more recently the Online MBA has become a legitimate option to pursue the Masters Degree. These internet distance learning degrees provide much of the same curriculum and case study material one would find in a full or part time traditional program but enable the student to work at home and often proceed at their own pace. Homework and assignments are often emailed in and tests are taken with computerized tests.
But there are trade-offs. First, Online MBA’s don’t enable the student to take part in valuable real world networking opportunities nor take part in group and one on one interaction with other students. The skills learned during these types of engagements can be extremely valuable, especially to younger students who are just entering the workplace and don’t have much real world work experience.
In addition, much of the value obtained from a traditional MBA program is in the intangible things you learn by from your fellow students. Top MBA programs are reknown for accepting stellar applicants from around the world bringing a wide variety of experience both professionally and culturally all contribute to the learning experience of the other students as well. Finally, Online MBA Programs don’t usually permit the meeting of real world professionals who they can speak with and learn from in addition to often create mentoring relationships with. With all the limitations of obtaining an MBA online however, there are situations in which it can be a viable option.
In situations where a student is already in the workplace and simply needs the credential, distance learning programs are an option. In addition, when costs are too exorbitant for traditional programs, online learning can provide an inexpensive and fairly thorough academic learning experience but without some of the personal benefits of university programs.
Finally, with recent improvements in technology, some of the more progressive schools have started trial programs where they offer MBA’s Online with some of the benefits of in-class participation. This enables lecturers and guest professionals to communicate with students via Telepresence or live video through the computer. In addition, students can communicate with each other via chat and message board systems, helping add another dimension to the online learning experience. In summary, while Online MBA programs don’t provide the panache or prestige of traditional top mba programs, they do serve as an important alternative in certain situations.
One should not be misled that they will obtain all the benefits of the traditional MBA through a distance learning program, but with new technologies helping to flesh out the weaker elements, they are progressing quickly as a viable alternative. While this might change in the future, for now online programs should be looked upon as mostly an option for those already in the workforce who are more interested in obtaining the credential for advancement, or for those who are interested just in the learning process such as those running their own businesses. If you fall into one of those two categories then perhaps you should look into forgoing the expense and time commitment of an in-person program and consider a progressive Online MBA. In Australia, is a regular Master in Business the same as an MBA?
I noticed that Australian universities offer regular Master programs in business that do not require any work experience. Is this regarded the same as an MBA? In America, pretty much all Masters in business are MBA’s. So I am very familiar with those degrees offered in Australia. Are these 2 degrees regarded the same in Australia?
