California Dental Association Foundation Awards Community Grant to Oakland Dentist

Luis Rivera, DDS

Sacramento, CA (Vocus) December 15, 2010

The California Dental Association Foundation has announced Luis Rivera, DDS, as the 10th recipient of its innovative and charitable Dental Student Loan Repayment Grant Program. Rivera, who graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry in 2009, will receive a maximum of $ 105,000 to help offset significant student loan debt in exchange for a three-year commitment to work in an underserved community.

New dentists graduate from dental school with an average debt of $ 250,000, and the burden of that debt limits their ability to choose a career in community health care. To date, tens of thousands of individuals have received care as a result of the Student Loan Repayment Grant, totaling more than $ 13.5 million in treatment and services.

“We are very proud of this program because it helps dedicated health care professionals achieve their career goals and allows them to provide proper care to underserved populations,” said Lindsey Robinson, DDS, chair of the California Dental Association Foundation. “I know that Dr. Rivera will serve as a vital asset to the community where he practices.”

Rivera grew up as an only child in a single-parent immigrant household. Although he was born in the United States, he was raised in Mexico prior to entering elementary school, beginning his education in Reseda, Calif., with English as a second language. To help support his family, Rivera worked throughout his high school education and while earning his undergraduate and doctorate degrees.

Rivera is currently fulfilling his three-year commitment at La Clinica de la Raza–Transit Village in Oakland.

“My long-term goal is to become an integral part of La Clinica de la Raza or an organization with similar goals for the community it serves, and this grant has helped me move toward that goal,” Rivera said. “My background affords me great insight into delivering culturally sensitive and appropriate health care, yielding great comfort to my patients.”

Our newest brain, our homo sapien brain, our neocortex, corresponds with the “what” level. The neocortex is responsible for all of our rational and analytical thought and language. The middle two sections make up our limbic brains. And our limbic brains are responsible for all of our feelings, like trust and loyalty. Sixty Percent of Meharry Students Match Into Critically Needed Primary Care Specialties

Meharry Medical College student Ariel Aguillard finds out where she matched during Match Day

(Vocus/PRWEB) March 18, 2011

The wait was over Thursday for Meharry Medical College students who, like their peers across the country, received news of where they would begin their postgraduate residency training during the nationwide Match Day event.

Meharry students successfully “matched” in dozens of residency training programs from coast to coast including such prestigious academic health centers as Mayo Clinic, Cincinnati Children’s , Baylor College of Medicine, New York Hospital-Weill Cornell medical center, Washington University in St. Louis, University of California, San Francisco, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Meharry Medical College.

More than 30,000 applicants apply for the match to find a position at a U.S. teaching hospital where they will undertake a three to seven year period of specialized training. Meharry’s overall match rate of 89 percent for the 2011 class of graduating seniors exceeds the national match rate of 73 percent for all applicants.

Match rates can be an indicator of career interest among U.S. medical school seniors. The majority of Meharry’s class of 89 fourth-year medical students were matched in the primary care fields of: Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Family Medicine. Sixty percent of Meharry fourth year students matched into primary care specialties. In addition, several students matched into other such specialty programs as orthopedics, urology, emergency medicine, psychiatry and radiology.

“At Meharry we proudly embrace and emphasize primary care as a very worthy career pursuit for future physicians,” said Charles P. Mouton, M.D., M.S., Dean, School of Medicine & Senior Vice President for Health Affairs. “The fact that so many of our students go into the primary care field is a tribute to our unique and nurturing brand of medical education, our institution and its role in helping to fill the increasing need for primary care physicians across the country.”

Match Day is the culmination of a process where medical schools students across the country submit their top three choices for residency programs to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), a nonprofit organization established in 1952 to create a fair mechanism to match the preferences of applicants to U.S. residency positions. Students who were “matched” received news on Monday that they would be assigned to one of their preference hospitals, but they did not find out which one until today as medical schools across the country celebrated Match Day.

Meharry’s President Wayne J. Riley, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP noted “that these impressive results once again validate the impressive work that Meharry Medical College contributes to the nation by nurturing the important “social mission” of American medical education by providing an outstanding cadre of new medical graduates who will work to address the shortage and imbalances in our healthcare workforce. I look forward with great enthusiasm to welcoming these newest colleagues to the profession in a few months as they receive their hard-earned degrees and go forth with the very special calling of healing those in need.”

Number of students who matched in each specialty area:

Primary Care Specialties

Family Medicine 10

Internal Medicine 17

Pediatrics 16

Obstetrics/Gynecology 6

Specialties

Anesthesiology 7

Emergency Medicine 6

General Surgery 3

Neurology 1

Orthopedic Surgery 3

Urology 4

Dermatology 1

Psychiatry 3

Radiology 4

Other Specialties 8

About the National Resident Matching Program: The National Resident Matching Program conducts Match Day annually to match the preference of applicants with their choice of medical residency programs that offer available training positions at U.S. teaching hospitals. A resident is a medical school graduate who is undertaking a 3 to 7 year period of specialized training in a medical specialty.

About Meharry Medical College: Meharry Medical College founded in 1876, is the nation’s largest private, independent historically black academic health center dedicated to educating minority and other health professionals. True to its heritage, it is a United Methodist Church affiliated institution. The College is particularly well known for its uniquely nurturing, highly effective educational programs; emerging preeminence in health disparities research; culturally sensitive, evidence-based health services and significant contribution to the diversity of the nation’s health professions workforce. Diverse Issues in Higher Education’s ranking of institutions annually lists Meharry as a leading national educator of African Americans with M.D. and D.D.S. degrees and Ph.D. degrees in the biomedical sciences. University of the Pacific to Launch New Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions Certification Program

xml:lang=”en” lang=”en” xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”>

University of the Pacific to Launch New Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions Certification Program

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 24, 2011

The Continuing Dental Education division at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry announced the launch of a new certification program, the Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) course. The program will begin on June 18, and will be directed by Molly P. Newlon, DDS, MA. The curriculum will be taught by faculty members from the Dugoni School of Dentistry and University of California, San Francisco, and will take place over an 11-month period on weekends at the Dugoni School of Dentistry’s campus in San Francisco.

RDAEF courses have been offered in California for many years, but new expanded functions were adopted recently, requiring RDAEFs to complete a more in-depth certification program. The Dugoni School of Dentistry’s course will satisfy the California Dental Board’s requirements for new and existing RDAEFs who wish to expand their licensure in preparation for earning certification in the new extended functions.

RDAEFs are trained to complete many restorative procedures which were previously only done by dentists. Although the dentist will continue to oversee treatment and will complete all surgical procedures on the teeth, the RDAEF is trained to properly complete many complex tasks—such as the filling of restorations—which can free up the dentist to see more patients and to deliver more care. RDAEFs are especially useful in large clinic or rural settings which often have a lack of dentists available to treat the underserved.

The new extended duties, which can be performed by dental assistants who complete this course and pass the California Board exam for extended functions, include making final impressions for crown, bridge and removable partial dentures and filling and polishing amalgam, composite and glass ionomer restorations. RDAEFs who complete this program may also complete general oral health assessments in community clinic settings and fit master and accessory cones for endodontic (root canal) procedures.

“All dentists may benefit from utilizing RDAEFs in their practice, particularly in large clinic settings where many patients are seen in a busy atmosphere,” said Newlon. “These specially-trained assistants are able to complete many procedures that were previously above a dental assistant’s scope of work.”

Newlon, the course director, has been actively involved with the RDAEF course at UCSF for 18 years. She currently serves as the director of Health and Safety at UCSF School of Dentistry and is an associate clinical professor. She is also a 1982 graduate of the Dugoni School of Dentistry. Joining Newlon as primary course instructors are Dugoni School of Dentistry faculty members: Drs. Brian Kenyon, Shika Gupta, Jeffrey Miles, Gitta Radjaeipour and Ariane Terlet. Dr. Darren Machule, a San Francisco endodontist and UCSF graduate, will also be a primary instructor.

The Dugoni School of Dentistry is currently one of only two providers offering the RDAEF course in Northern California. Funding options are available to qualified candidates.

For more information or to enroll, call the Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Continuing Dental Education division at 415.929.6485 or visit dental.pacific.edu/ce1.
