Are you sure it isn’t a Master’s in the Entertainment Business? Because otherwise I have a mental image of a clown juggling in a roomful of accountants who are trying to focus on their calculations! I’m not terribly impressed with the for-profit online programs in general, I’ll have to say. And I heard the other day that the vast majority of the students who get over their heads in debt are at those schools.

In this case, the curriculum looks like a hodgepodge. For example, there is an “Advanced Entertainment Law” class, but no earlier law class, so how advanced could the class possibly be? There are little bits and pieces of a lot of different subject matters that don’t seem to lead to any particular kind of job.

Honestly, I can understand why they would offer such a program. I worked at a university in L.A. for many years, and there was a lot of pressure from students to offer a program in “the industry”. But no one takes a job as an industry, they need a skill. And I’m not convinced that such a program would really give them anything they couldn’t in any MBA program.

I’m a freshman in college, taking a pre-med course and I didn’t choose this for myself, my dad did because he said it has a lot of benefits like I could move to any country I want (even though I don’t wanna move to another country) but my mom said I could always transfer in a year if I decide what I really want to be. Now, at first I wanted to be something creative, I love fashion, make up, drawing, sketching… I mean, I got into a good university for advertising arts (which is perfect cause it’s business AND art, so I’m not too worried about finding a job) but my dad flipped and made me take a pre-med course or he won’t pay my tuition. So, I can’t transfer to that university anymore with the advertising arts because they’re REALLY tough when it comes to transferees, and I’m not that confident in my current grades. So now, I’m taking a pre-med course and I’m still lost about what I want to do for the rest of my life. When I look at courses offered in other colleges, sometimes I think about just taking business since it’s so broad but that’s too reckless. My mom said I need more guidance, well I don’t know where to get my friggin guidance! So I’m asking here. My options are:

A. Just take a business course like Management or something, it so broad!
B. Continue with Pre-Med, then Med and become a doctor or forensic scientist or surgeon, something awesome.
C. Finish Pre-Med, and take another course that I like (like fashion or something) when I graduate, like get two bachelor degrees

I mean, becoming a doctor wasn’t really a childhood dream or anything but I think the only reason why that option is there is because, my family has this thing for being academics, like my mom’s an Executive Judge, my eldest sister is taking her masters degree in business in Denmark, my other sister who’s like a senior in college now studying economics, is going to law school after; and during her HS years she was offered scholarships to Harvard & MIT. So I feel like I have to contribute to our family name or something..

The trouble with your question is that the real money is in the entrepreneurial role. It also has the greatest risk.
I have had over a 30 year career at a large manufacturing company. I am not what I consider rich but I have a very comfortable life and expect to be able to retire without reducing my standard of living. The young people I work with today have strong abilities using a combination of languages. C++ is certainly important but SQL is also important for DataBase interactions. Scripting languages like K-Shell and Perl as well as Visual Basic also need to be in your bag of tricks. An understanding of Multi threading applications to support the availability of multiple processor computers is the future.

Hi! So, I am thinking about applying to business school, and since I am a resident of L.A., that narrows my choice to only a few: UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, and CSUN. Okay, let me be straight. My undergrad GPA was a 2.9, and I don’t have a year to devote to studying for the GMAT, so I think UCLA and USC are a long shot. Pepperdine (to me at least) seems like a decent, albeit ‘Tier 2′ school. It’s the school everyone goes to when they can’t get into UCLA or USC MBA program. Pepperdine is pretty damn expensive, about the cost of USC for being a Tier 2 school, in my opinion. Anyone have any advice on where I should apply? I would like to start soon, and dam USC and UCLA make you apply in the Fall for round 1 and if accepted, you don’t attend until the following year. What a joke. Anyone have good or bad things to say about either UCLA, USC, pepperdine, or CSUN for an MBA? Thanks!

Forget UCLA, frankly. USC is a stretch as well. I would takek Northridge and not spend the extra money. Do you have some work experience that will look good on your application? That means a lot to the admissions committee.

“Shuttle Rising” Coincides With Nasa’s Return to Flight

NASA astronauts will soon return to flight. Their launch to the space station will coincide with the launch of “Shuttle Rising,” a space adventure novel by one of NASA’s own, author Charles Boyle, a veteran of 32 years with the space agency.

“The mutual timing is uncanny,” said Boyle, “given that I’ve been working on this story off and on for nine years.” Asked why the novel took that long to complete, Boyle said, “Decades of writing for the government were not good preparation for writing a novel. I had to retool.”

Boyle described government writing vs novel writing with three examples:

“First, and worst, is inexperience in writing dialogue. The closest we might get is to use an occasional quote. Next, is the need to break the practice of using the passive voice, which produces lines like, ‘Mistakes were made.’ And then, because we couldn’t ‘hype’ anything, we got little practice in using adjectives. I had to go to school on such problems. It was a long apprenticeship in seminars, courses and critique groups.”

“Shuttle Rising” shows the gratifying results. Subtitled “To Rendezvous With A Rumor,” Boyle’s gripping science fiction/techno-thriller/romance rings with authenticity, clarity, drama and excitement. Set in the near future, its plot is driven by the behavior of a Russia that has returned to Communism and is undermining a proposed UN treaty to inspect all nations for weapons of mass destruction, saying the integrity of its word alone makes inspection unnecessary.

In a stealthy space rendezvous, astronaut Adam MacGregor captures a derelict rumored to be a tomb, a failed manned mission from the early days of Soviet space flight.

The US President wants it opened in space and its contents televised live to the world. He intends to refute Moscow’s claim that no cosmonaut ever died in orbit, thus reminding the world that Communists lie and cannot be trusted. At stake are wavering votes for the “Open Lands” treaty. Russia, detecting Adam’s rendezvous, warns him to retreat. Adam presses on and discovers what Moscow is really hiding: a sensational space exploit that ended in tragedy. As the Russians attack, he fights for his life and for a chance at undying love with an aroused enemy, a revenant whom gravity will kill if she returns to Earth.

Charles Boyle served as Educational Programs Manager for Earth Sciences at the Goddard Space Flight Center, near Washington, DC. Prior to NASA, he worked at Bell Labs, Esso, Scott Paper, Western Electric, and US Steel.

Boyle is the author of Tailey Whaley, an illustrated children’s book, in which a whale, born “different,” faces intolerance. His 1970’s book, Space Among Us, described many of the emerging effects of space research on society. Boyle’s writing has appeared in Science and Omni magazines. For the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, he served as space flight editor. He wrote a column called “Space Appreciation” for the Journal of Aerospace Education and has been a contributing editor to various space advocacy publications including Space World, Ad Astra, and Aviation/Space Magazine. Time Magazine quoted from “Boyle’s Other Laws,” a gathering of his aphorisms.

Boyle received a Mechanical Engineering degree from Tulane, an M.B.A. in Business Administration from N. Y. U., and a physics major Masters in Education from Harvard.

A scuba diver, sailboat racer, and “ancient athlete,” Boyle won two gold medals in track at the 2001 National Senior Olympics. In 2004, he set a new American age-group record in the USA Track&Field Masters 3000 meter racewalk.

He served with the U.S. Maritime Service and the U.S. Navy, 1943-1947.
